The Academy addresses innovation, development, and policy from a multidisciplinary perspective, and is relevant to the Global South and the Global North. Thus, it is open to doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers who work on (but not limited to) the following areas:

- Systems of innovation and contributions to technological capability building for innovation, including social, inclusive, sustainable, and responsible innovation.
- International business (for e.g., FDI, innovation, and development).
- Science, technology, and innovation policy.
- Transitions to digitalization, sustainability, and post-pandemic recovery.
- Industry 4.0 technologies and development.
- Topics related to areas under the Sustainable Development Goals, innovation, and development (e.g., innovating for climate change, for energy; innovating for gender equity and for diversity; poverty eradication through innovative means).
The Academy will bring together leading practitioners and frontier researchers within these 3 intersecting fields, and they will lead the sessions across multiple practical and theoretical areas. The Academy experience will include:
- Lectures and mentoring from leading practitioners and scholars.
- Panels featuring experts in policymaking.
- Faculty feedback on one working paper for each participant.
- Advice on job talks and career/professional advancement.
- An interdisciplinary group research project.
The academic and practitioner mentors leading the Academy will impart knowledge and skills on interacting with the policymaking process across these multidisciplinary research areas.
Advanced Ph.D. students within three years of the award of their PhDs and postdoctoral researchers are eligible. Applications should include a brief letter of nomination, a statement from the applicant of their own research and why they want to be included, and a curriculum vitae. Nominations will close on December 12, 2022. Applications must be submitted at international.phdacademy@hec.ca.
The Academy will be held at the new HEC Montreal building in downtown Montreal, beginning at 10:30am on Monday May 29th, 2023, and ending at 4:00pm on Saturday, June 3rd, 2023. Lunches, coffee breaks, and two dinners will be provided to participants.
Accepted students arriving from outside Montreal will be eligible for a stipend upon presentation of receipts, to partly cover travel, accommodation, and visa fees (where relevant), unless they have an external source of funding for these items. The stipend will be pro-rated depending on the size of the participant’s expenses. Participants will arrange their own travel and be responsible for costs exceeding the stipend.
